All Call for Pies!

On Friday, November 22nd, the Cybercafe and Patio will be transformed with fall decor and music for the Penguin Pie Fest!  Students will be asked stay on campus for lunch (they will bring their own lunch or buy one from school) so we can all share a meal together before the Thanksgiving break.  Staff will serve holiday dessert and hot cocoa or hot cider to students who stay for the shared meal.

With the goal being to share a meal, we decided to remove the financial aspect from the holiday luncheon.  All students will be invited at no cost.  Since it is no cost, we will need donations.  That's where the "All Call for Pies" comes in - parents and staff are being asked to help provide this gift to students.

More on why the Holiday Luncheon Adjuncts changed the Holiday Luncheon:
In the past it has been a challenge to get students to purchase tickets to the holiday luncheon and to heat the food without proper equipment.  In spite of the serious effort that went into it (according to the team that pulled it off last year, it was a TON of work to plan a catered event and sell tickets to meet the bottom like for an unknown # of attendants), last year only about 1/4 of students attended the event.  The school lost money, parents were displeased with the quality of the food, and the stress of failed attempts to warm/prepare food was major.

“The shared meal elevates eating from a mechanical process of  fueling the body to a ritual of family and community,  from the mere animal biology to an act of culture.”  Michael Pollan, In Defense of Food: An Eater's Manifesto

If you have further questions or concerns about changes we've made to this event, please don't hesitate to talk with Tom or Christie Wolf.
