Purdue Researcher looking for teacher/student participants...

FOR TEACHERS:

Hello,

We are all aware that computer games are played by ourstudents during their free time. Recent research has shown that games are also effective for teaching content as well. My name is Dana Ruggiero and I am PhD student at Purdue working towards my dissertation at the Serious Games Lab. I am interested in finding out if games that are persuasive can actually motivate students to be more socially responsible and active.
What I need: 6th-12th grade teachers who are willing to have their students take a 5 minute survey, play a persuasive game on homelessness or read a story, and take a 5 minute post test. Three weeks later they would take another 5 minute post test. This will take approximately 30 minutes total over the course of three weeks (done in a computer lab or on laptops if thestudents have them). I will send you a link to the survey and the students do the rest on their own.

What I can offer: You will receive a report on the data collected broken down by age, gender, race, and GPA of how your students rate playinggames as both a pedagogical tool and a persuasive instrument, plus the data of all the schools that participate as well (with no identifying data attached). This data will hopefully be rich with implications for using games in the classroom to teach and engage students in 21st century skills. Teachers will also be able to collaborate with the Purdue Serious Games Lab to create lesson plans involving serious games. It is my hope to form lasting relationships with these classes that will allow teachers interested in using free, online content rich games a way to grow in this area.
When this would take place: At the teachers' convenience between April and December of 2012.
What next: If you are willing to participate please send me an email at druggier@purdue.edu and I will send you the survey link for your students.

Thank you,

Dana
